Behind the Lens: Two Weeks of International Tennis in Brisbane

What do you do when two weeks of world-class international tennis arrives in your hometown with free entry? You grab your gear and head to the courts.

Fresh off the adrenaline of the Brisbane International in January, I was eager to get back behind the glass. While the Top 10 stars had moved on from the Australian Open, the World Challenger Series was just heating up. Don’t let the rankings fool you—players outside the Top 100 bring a raw intensity to the court that is a dream to photograph.

Unlike the strict 200mm lens limits at major ATP events, the Challenger series offered total creative freedom. I spent the fortnight roaming the grounds with:

  • Body 1: Canon 1Dx paired with a 400mm f/2.8 for those tight, emotional action shots.

  • Body 2: Canon 1Dx with a 70-200mm f/2.8 for wider court coverage and serves.

Despite the world-class play from winners like Tristian Schoolkate, Talia Gibson, Zhang Zhizhen, and Emerson Jones, the crowds were intimate, often leaving me as the sole photographer capturing the action.
