ABOUT
Brett Wood doesn’t just document sport; he understands its pulse. With over 40 years of experience as an athlete and coach, he knows the grit required before the game and the emotion that explodes after the final whistle. This instinct allows him to capture the moments others miss. Based in Australia, Brett specialises in high-impact, story-driven imagery that brings the raw reality of competition to life.

It started with the weight of a Zenit EM in my hands.
At sixteen, my father gave me my first film SLR. While I was already learning the mechanics of shooting and processing in the school darkroom, that camera changed how I viewed the world. Suddenly, light, movement, and composition weren’t just technical elements; they were a way of seeing.
Growing up in a sports-mad family, it was inevitable that my two passions would collide. I took my camera everywhere: from the roar of the stands at Lang Park to the salt spray of Burleigh Heads for the early Stubbies Pro. With a zoom lens and a 2x extender, I learned to anticipate the action, freezing moments of intensity and raw skill.
My path almost took a different turn. My father had proudly shared my portfolio with a contact at The Courier-Mail, opening the door to a potential cadetship at The Telegraph. But shortly after, he passed away suddenly. In the grief and chaos, the opportunity slipped away. However, his influence remained the driving force behind my work.
I chose to study Physical Education, deepening my understanding of human movement. I spent years playing everything from Rugby League and Union to Surfing, Baseball, and Basketball. I learned the rhythm and discipline of competition from the inside.
Today, I stepped out of the game and onto the sideline. My photography is shaped by that lived experience—capturing sport not just as an observer, but with the insight and empathy of someone who has lived it.
MY BACKGROUND
I’m still a lover of the look that film brings. My current film set up consists of the following:
-
Pentax 67 paired with one of three lenses; 105mm f2.8; 75mm f4; 45mm f4.5
-
Canon A1 paired with a 50mm f2
-
Nikon F5 paired with a 50mm f1.8
As much as I love shooting film I realise that digital makes a lot of sense when working in sports photography. My current digital set up consists of the following:
-
2x Canon 1Dx bodies paired with one of the following lenses; 400mm f2.8; 70-200mm f2.8; 50mm f1.4; 16-35mm f2.8
-
Fujifilm X-T2 paired with one of the following lenses; 35mm f2; 10-25mm f4; 56mm f1.2
MY GEAR
“Good sports photography isn’t about the camera — it’s about knowing when not to blink.”
