Capturing the Drama: Beach Ultimate National Championships Photography Highlights
The Australian Beach Ultimate National Championships held on Coolangatta Beach had it all. From elite athleticism to wild Gold Coast weather, capturing this premier ultimate frisbee event was an unforgettable challenge.
As with all Ultimate competitions, there was a brilliant balance of high-spirited fun and intense, elite competition.
Photographing Sports in Wild Weather Conditions
To make the tournament even more challenging for an action sports photographer, the coastal weather was completely unpredictable—switching between high winds, heavy rain, and bursts of harsh sunshine.
Photographing a fast-paced sport in those elements tested not only my technical camera skills and gear durability but also my physical stamina. Tracking high-flying plastic discs through shifting winds and sand requires split-second timing and absolute focus.
The Result: Three full days of shooting left me completely exhausted, but incredibly rewarded with some of the best action shots of the season.
More Than Just Action Shots
Beyond witnessing first-class athletic competition on the sand, the highlight of the weekend was the community. I met some wonderfully friendly players, coaches, and fans who make the Australian ultimate frisbee scene so unique.
